Nobody drew this. No one specified the spacing between the ribs or decided how far each blade should reach before it tapers. It arrived at its own symmetry, and then made small mistakes with it - a torn edge here, a leaf that didn't quite make it, two that overlapped where they shouldn't.

That's the difference between a pattern and a design. A design gets checked. This just kept unfolding in one direction until it ran out of light, and the result is more precise than anything anyone would have thought to draw.
